This is easily solved with a few changes in the build configuration:

1. Press Alt+F7 to go to the Profile
2. Select the desired profile (e.g. LaTeX=>PDF)
3. Select the Postprocessor tab
4. Press the “dotted square” icon (left from the red “x”)
5. Name the new command (e.g. Nomenclature)
6. In the executable path below, write: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\miktex\bin\makeindex.exe (or whatever path the file makeindex.exe is located)
7. In the arguments, write: –s nomencl.ist “%tm.nlo” -o “%tm.nls”

You can test it works with the following code:

When I compile a paper in LaTeX using TeXnicCenter, if the PDF is open, it does not refresh automatically in Acrobat 8.0, so it needs to be closed before running the code.

By changing some settings, the whole thing automates:

• Press Alt-F7 to enter the BUILD/ Define Output Profiles, and select the “Viewer” envelope.
• At the “View project’s output” select “DDE” and paste at the Command:  [DocOpen("%bm.pdf")][FileOpen("%bm.pdf")] , at the Server: acroview and at the Topic: control
• At the “Forward Search”, REPEAT the above instructions
• At the “Close document before running (La)TeX”, select “DDE” and paste at the Command: [DocClose("%bm.pdf")], at the Server: acroview and at the Topic: control

If you have included everything, it should work!

In more detail now, for “lower-lever” programming, the first thing one must do is to put epanet2.dll and epanet2.h in a new folder and setup Matlab to work within that folder. The library files can be imported in Matlab using the loadlibrary command. To see the functions included in the library, use the libfunctions command. For calling a method, use the calllib command with the same arguments as described in the toolkit. When you have reference to pointers, you must use the libpointer command.

1. η ηλεκτρόνική μηχανή ψηφοφορίας εκτυπώνει ένα ψηφοδέλτιο

Σύμφωνα με το OVC, μπορούν να ψηφίσουν εύκολα άτομα με οπτικά προβλήματα. Επιπρόσθετα συνδιάζεται η αξιοπιστία της καταμέτρησης με το χέρι και του λογισμικού ανοικτού κώδικα. Το λογισμικό μπορετε να το δοκιμάσετε εδώ, και να το κατεβάσετε εδώ.

Συγκεκριμένα, το λογισμικό που βρίσκεται αποθηκευμένο σε CD χρησιμοποιείται για να γίνει εκκίνηση, σε οποιοδήποτε υπολογιστή. Αφού ψηφίσει ο χρήστης, ένας εκτυπωτής τυπώνει τη ψήφο, μέσα στη θαλάμη ψηφοφορίας, η οποία περιλαμβάνει τα ονόματα των επιλογών καθώς και barcodes. Η ψήφος μπαίνει αυτόματα σε ένα φάκελο προστασίας, από τον οποίο φαίνονται μόνο τα barcodes (τα οποία στην φωτογραφία αναπαριστούν τον αριθμό 8032823949405466932590832153788596108316). Ο ψηφοφόρος, μπορεί να τα σαρώσει πριν καταθέσει τη ψήφο του και να ακούσει, εαν θέλει, τη ψήφο του, πριν να την καταθέσει στην κάλπη. Μετά που ανοίγει η κάλπη, η καταμέτρηση μπορεί να γίνει με το χέρι, είτε/και με τη χρήση σαρωτή barcodes.

Φαίνεται πάντως πιο πιθανό η λύση των προβλημάτων ηλεκτρ. ψηφοφορίας που αντιμετωπίζουν οι ΗΠΑ, να βρίσκεται στα συστήματα ανοικτού κώδικα, αφού μόνο έτσι μπορεί να υπάρχει έλεγχος και διαφάνεια, αυτά ακριβώς δηλαδή που στερούνται όλα τα μέχρι στιγμής συστήματα που χρησιμοποιούνται στις εκλογικές τους διαδικασίες.

Overview

The motivation of this study is the small number of experimental evaluations that currently exists in the related literature. In addition to that, most relevant studies with feedback either are based on either the developer’s intuition, or transcriptions from verbal classroom instruction. Our findings, however, indicate that human tutors provide different feedback in spoken, and different in writing.

Prior to the evaluation, an empirical study was conducted with questionnaires with various expert tutors of French, regarding mistake treatment in the Passive Voice. The French Passive Voice is recognised by teachers as an area in which Anglophones have difficulty with. The results of the study showed that the majority of the feedback messages
the teachers had given, contained metalinguistic information with either general information about the mistake or statement the rule which was violated.

Two groups from a total of 19 learners from around the world were used. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of the two different types of Feedback, in an on-line experiment. The one group received tutoring with Rule Prompting Feedback and the other group with General Prompting Feedback. A Pre-test and a Post-test was given to the participants before and immediately after the tutoring session.

The results show that the difference in learning gain in the Post-test in comparison with the Pre-test is significant for both the Rule and the General Prompting group. They did not support, however, that the difference between the learning gains of the two groups is significant. The results seem to explain the popularity of these two types of feedback among tutors of French, as shown in the empirical study.

This research confirms previous studies that metalinguistic feedback assists learners to perform significantly better in the Post-test results. Moreover, it indicates that for the ILTS, the proper kind of feedback should be used to treat the proper type of mistake.

Afterthoughts: So, where’s the intelligence? Well, the intelligence in the program exists in a number of clever but hard-wired algorithms for identifying the type of fault, from a finite list of faults. By “clever” I do not just mean the the use of AI algorithms, but the process of actually identifying what can go wrong with such an exercise by an experienced teacher!

The perceived intelligence however, as the users of e-Ecole understood it, was depending on the feedback they got. So essentially, the system appeared intelligent not because it could identify their faults, but because it managed to provide meaningful feedback to correct the users.

Of course feedback needs to adjust to a student’s needs; however feedback itself must derive from within a set of successful feedback strategies, followed by teachers throughout the decades. So, to build intelligent learning systems, we need to talk and acquire knowledge from some intelligent teachers! And this is the most important part of this exercise.

By the way, my personal favourite (as for most) is General Prompting!

• I thought the feedback was more helpful that a human tutor because a human tutor rarely tells you that a verb should be third person singular future tense. (They usually say, wrong tense, try again.)

Το άρθρο παρουσιάζει την μεταφορά της αντιπαράθεσης «δεξιών» και «αριστερών» κατά τη διάρκεια του Ελληνικού εμφυλίου πολέμου, στα κυπριακά σωματεία. Μέσω του άρθρου, αντιλαμβάνεται κάποιος από που πηγάζει αυτός ο έντονος πολιτικός διχασμός, ακόμη και μίσος, ανάμεσα σε οπαδούς των ομάδων. Ακόμη έτσι δικαιολογείται το γεγονός πως οι οπαδοί των ομάδων, παραμένουν τόσο έντονα «ποδοσφαιρικά πολιτικοποιημένοι», μεταφέροντας σύμβολα στο γήπεδο που «αντικατοπτρίζουν» τα πολιτικά τους «πιστεύω»

…Δυστυχώς όμως παρά την ενοποίηση οι βαθιά ριζωμένες διαφορές, ο διχασμός και η προκατάληψη παρέμειναν. Η κομματικοποίηση είχε τόσο πολύ εμπεδωθεί που συνέχισε να ταλανίζει τον χώρο του κυπριακού ποδοσφαίρου. Ο φανατισμός, το μίσος, οι αντιπαλότητες μεταξύ δεξιών και αριστερών ομάδων, μεταξύ δεξιών και αριστερών οπαδών, ποτέ δεν εξέλειπαν. Το κυπριακό ποδόσφαιρο παρέμεινε δυστυχώς δέσμιο της νοσηρής αυτής κατάστασης και νοοτροπίας. Overview:

The study of specific scenario-based closed models may help us deliver some useful conclusions through proper data analysis. Interpreting a society and its mentality is a difficult task though, and perhaps impossible to completely cover in full range all its aspects, which may be visible, or be hidden under a chaotic way of behaviour.

Keeping this in mind, we pursue the simulation of a closed system in an artificial society, that of a hereditary disease  epidemiological behaviour and how it affects a population, as part of a multi agent system. Agents, as human, acquire
human characteristics: education on the disease, fear for the birth of non healthy descendants, as well with other human-like mate selection criteria, as wealth (included in the genetic algorithm), topological distance, age differences and others.

The simulating system, called GeneCity, deploys an initial population of agents, under user specified demographical and sociological data, and can observe the changes through a period of epochs, with mate selection, marriages, deaths, births, genetic crossover and mutation, both for the biological and social genes.

Technical: The software was implemented in Java, using the JADE framework suitable for multi-agent environments.

Σύμφωνα με το Google, το 1998, το σύστημά τους είχε καταχωρημένες 26 εκατομμύρια σελίδες, ενώ το 2000 αυτές είχαν ξεπεράσει το ένα δισεκατομμύριο. Σήμερα, εκτιμάται πως 40 δισεκατομμύρια σελίδες περιέχονται στο ευρετήριο της Google, εξαιτίας του ψηλού κόστους επεξεργασίας του τεράστιου όγκου δεδομένων.

Στις 28 Ιουλίου ξεκίνησε τη λειτουργία της μια καινοτόμα μηχανή αναζήτησης, η Cuil (“γνώση” στα ιρλανδικά). Φέρεται πως έχει πετύχει τη μείωση του αντίστοιχου κόστους στο 1/10 και τη δημιουργία ευρετηρίου με περισσότερες από 120 δισεκατομμύρια σελίδες. Πίσω από αυτή τη νέα εταιρία κρύβονται πρώην υπάλληλοι της Google, οι οποίοι προσεγγίζουν το πρόβλημα αναζήτησης με εντελώς νέα προσέγγιση. Αυτή τη στιγμή φαίνεται να αποτελούν τους πιο σοβαρούς ανταγωνιστές της Google στο θέμα αναζήτησης.

Από τεχνικής απόψεως, η διαφορά του με το Google είναι στο ότι δεν βάζει ένα βαθμό (Pagerank) σε κάθε σελίδα ανάλογα με το αν είναι δημοφιλης (για το οποίο υπάρχουν πολλές μέθοδοι που μπορεί να επηρεαστεί. Αντίθετα, το Cuil αναλύει τις ιστοσελίδες σημασιολογικά, έτσι σελίδες για τα hot-dogs και σκύλους θα εμφανίζονται στα αποτελέσματα, αλλά ως ξεχωριστές κατηγορίες και όχι μαζεμένα. Έτσι αποφεύγει ο χρήστης να επαναδιατυπώνει το ερώτημά του, αφού πλέον υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη πληροφορία στις απαντήσεις που λαμβάνει. Επιπρόσθετα, σύμφωνα με τους μηχανικούς του Cuil, δεν αποθηκεύκουν κανένα προσωπικό δεδομένο στους server τους, παρά μόνο αυτά που έχουν σχέση με τα ερωτήματα (όχι δηλαδή τα IP).

Το Cuil θέλει ακόμη αρκετή δουλειά φυσικά, αλλά λόγω του ότι είναι μόλις 1 ημέρας, θα αναμένουμε να δούμε την εξέλιξή του. Τα αποτελέσματα του στα ελληνικά δεν είναι πάντα τα καλύτερα, όπως και μερικά ερωτήματα στα αγγλικά. Ίσως όμως είμαστε επηρεασμένοι από το τρόπο αναζήτησης στο Google.com, όπου οι σελίδες “πάλεψαν” πολύ για φτάσουν εκεί που έφτασαν… 

Η ανακοίνωση της Google, για το μέγεθος του διαδικτύου, μόλις λίγες μέρες της δημοσιοποίησης του Cuil, θεωρείται από διάφορους αναλυτές ως ένδειξη ότι εκλαμβάνουν το Cuil σαν μια σοβαρή προσπάθεια. Σίγουρα, πάντως, ο ανταγωνισμός δεν έβλαψε ποτέ κανένα!

Μέσα σε 3 μόλις μέρες από την κυκλοφορία του, το iPhone 3G της Apple πώλησε περισσότερο από 1 εκατομμύρια συσκευές. Το νέο κινητό έχει καλύτερη αναπαραγωγή ήχου από το προηγούμενο μοντέλο, εντούτοις παραμένει το πρόβλημα της σχετικά χαμηλής ανάλυσης της κάμερας (2 megapixels), η απουσία MMS, το ότι δεν μπορεί ο χρήστης να κάνει copy/paste στα κείμενα του, και ότι η μπαταρία αποφορτίζεται γρήγορα.

Το καινοτόμο χαρακτηριστικό του iPhone 3G είναι το App Store, το οποίο δίνει τη δυνατότητα να κατεβάζει ο χρήστης στη συσκευή προγράμματα και διαδικτυακές εφαρμογές, δωρεάν ή με μικρό κόστος. Μέσω του App Store, οι χρήστες θα μπορούν να κατεβάζουν διάφορες εφαρμογές και να τις εγκαθιστούν στο κινητό τους.

Για το σκοπό αυτό η Apple δημοσίευσε την 8η (beta) έκδοση του iPhone SDK, με το οποίο οι προγραμματιστές μπορούν να δημιουργήσουν εφαρμογές για το νέο κινητό. Ταυτόχρονα, κάλεσε τους προγραμματιστές να τις προωθήσουν μέσω του App Store. Η υπηρεσία αυτή επιτρέπει σε νέες εταιρίες να προχωρήσουν σε κερδοφόρες καινοτόμες εφαρμογές, εκμεταλλευόμενοι τα τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά του iPhone.

Μέχρι στιγμής, πέραν των 3D παιχνιδιών, προσφέρονται διάφορα άλλα προγράμματα (χρήσιμα και μη) όπως για τη καταγραφή της πίεσης και του ζαχάρου, προτάσεις για κοντινά εστιατόρια, λήμματα της Wikipedia, προβολή τιμών βενζίνης ανά περιοχή και άλλα πολλά. Η λίστα προγραμμάτων αυξάνεται συνεχώς.
